A delicate life-saving emergency operation and subsequent orthopedic treatment with very high clinical and logistical complexity. It is the challenge won by the doctors and healthcare workers of the “San Giovanni di Dio” Hospital in Crotone, who saved the life of a young patient weighing 170 kg, suffering from severe obesity, who was the victim of a very violent road accident in the Crotone province.
The clinical picture, immediately dramatic due to the high energy of the impact and the particular physical conditions of the young man, required the timely activation of a multidisciplinary care chain.
In the first instance, the patient was urgently taken to the operating rooms of the General Surgery Unit for a very first life-saving operation aimed at stabilizing his primary functions. Subsequently, he was taken care of by the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit, whose constant assistance allowed the monitoring and safety of his vital parameters, preparatory to the next surgical step.
Having secured the general framework, the Orthopedics and Traumatology team intervened to reconstruct a complex femur fracture. The operation represented a real test of technical skill: both for the surgical and positioning maneuvers made particularly difficult by the size of the patient, and for the adoption of an advanced approach of locoregional anesthesia, which confirms itself as a milestone for the Crotone Hospital in the management of cases at very high anesthetic risk. The patient’s favorable post-operative course today confirms the success of the entire care chain.
