The Complex Otolaryngology Operational Unit of the Milazzo Hospital, directed by Vincenzo Milone, guarantees high quality healthcare, with an active daytime on-call service and night-time availability, covering the entire Tyrrhenian coastal strip of the province of Messina. During the summer period, in addition to the resident population, the service also extends to the numerous tourists who flock to this area, including the splendid Aeolian Islands. The department, in addition to the head physician Vincenzo Milone, also has excellent medical managers: Carmelo Quattrocchi, Francesco La Malfa, Piera Bonavita, Massimo Munafò and Salvina Ruolo and very efficient and competent nursing staff. During 2024, over 500 surgical operations carried out, divided into low, medium and high complexity, and more than 5000 outpatient and emergency room services. Already in the first days of 2025, several highly complex oncological operations were successfully performed, including a total laryngectomy with lateral cervical emptying, a hemiglossectomy with lateral cervical emptying and a bucco-pharyngectomy. The level of care provided has allowed patients to avoid so-called health tourism. In addition to traditional outpatient services, which include ENT, audiological, endoscopic and audio-vestibular examinations, there are also complex and specialized services. In recent years, we have activated a clinic for the prescription and administration of biological drugs for rhino-sinus polyposis, becoming a single prescribing center authorized by the Sicily Region for this area. Furthermore, our oncology clinic allows patients in the head and neck area to undergo constant follow-up over time. Finally, this Operating Unit has been cited several times for having promptly carried out life-saving interventions in patients with acute respiratory difficulties, caused by anaphylactic shock or ingestion of foreign bodies, even in pediatric patients.
