Legambiente Calabria thunders against Occhiuto: “Rigassifier of Gioia Tauro? No, thanks!”

“The latest statements by President Roberto Occhiuto in which the availability of the Calabrians, their territories and maritime spaces is reiterated to host an energy infrastructure such as that of the re -assessor, have nothing to do with an energy future capable of responding to the climatic and social challenge of the region and the country”. This is what we read in a note from Legambiente Calabria.

“Indeed, for as repeatedly reported by Legambiente, the regasifier would represent only a conviction for our territories by forcing families and businesses to support increasingly heavy energy costs.

It would be a system that should process 12 billion cubic meters of fossil gases occupying about 47 hectares of ground moreover in a high seismicity area. A real useless and anachronistic work in a country where gas consumption is increasingly in reduction and in a region where, given the potential, renewables could and should play a fundamental role in terms of energy autonomy, energy costs and in terms of development bringing new jobs, innovation and quality of life.

We do not understand this obstinacy of President Occhiuto in wanting to underline an availability that in Calabria, as in other regions, would only bring economic damage. All the more so if we think that our region is a market area in its own right and, therefore, with the new reform of the energy price, the development of renewables would lower the cost of electricity in Calabria.

We need a more forward -looking vision for the good of our region and its inhabitants, to look to the future 100% renewable, the reduction of costs and the innovation of the territories. Thinking about a lines in Gioia Tauro does not mean wanting the good of Calabria, but exactly the opposite “.
