“The approval by the Cipess of the final project of the bridge over the Strait represents a crucial passage, which marks an important stage in the path of construction of an infrastructure destined to deeply affect the life of our territory”. This was stated by the mayor of Messina Federico Basile. «As we have always supported – adds the first citizen – Messina must be active at every stage of the project. We cannot allow that a transformation of this reach takes place without a full involvement of the city in the strategic choices that concern its future. The national government today has the responsibility – continues Basile – to demonstrate concrete attention to Messina, starting from the management of construction sites, which must be organized so as not to compromise the mobility and quality of daily life. It will be necessary to guarantee the ordinary operation of the city, from essential services to schools, from hospitals to offices, in a context that is announced and transformative. We reiterate, as administrators of the city, the centrality of compensatory works, already identified and transmitted in a list of 24 strategic interventions, many of which respond to structural needs of the territory. Some of these – underlines the mayor Basile – must be started before the opening of the bridge construction sites, to ensure real sustainability of the project. In the same way, we ask that Messina has an active role in the definition of employment and logistical policies related to the work, so that the impacts are not only sustainable, but produce tangible and lasting benefits for our community. We therefore welcome today’s passage – concludes the first citizen – but with the awareness that the real challenge begins now. The city of Messina is ready to do its part, but it strongly asks that its instances are listened to and translated into concrete acts. Because development cannot ignore compliance with the territory and the protection of citizens’ rights “
