Mattia Furlani is only twenty years old but has already entered the legend. At the Tokyo World Championships, the blue has conquered gold in the long jump, signing a leap of 8.39 meters, new personal record, and thus becoming the youngest world champion of the specialty. A result that marks a turning point for Italian athletics: never before a blue athlete had triumphed in a male long outdoor world championship.

A family talent

Born in Marino, in the province of Rome, on February 7, 2005, Furlani grew up in a real sports family. The father Marcello, a former 2.27 meter alista, is his coach; Mother Khaty Seck was a sprinter, while her sister Erika also distinguished herself in the top. A genetic and cultural inheritance that Mattia has transformed into talent and determination, finding in Padua’s golden flames the ideal context to grow.

The climb to gold

His path was a constant progression: in 2022 the double European gold U18 (long and high), in 2023 the international youth affirmations, up to the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze with 8.34. The indoor world title in Nanchino (8.30) had already anticipated the potential of a predestined. In Tokyo, however, the boy made the definitive leap: world champion with 8.39, in front of the giants of the discipline.

Technique and character

Furlani is appreciated for its run -up speed and for the ability to remain cold in the decisive moments. Despite the initial errors in qualifying, he was able to place the perfect jump when he counted. A mix of technical skills and maturity that already make it today one of the absolute references of the long world jump.

Italy who dreams

With this triumph, athletics Italy adds a precious piece to a season to remember. For Furlani it is only the beginning: at twenty years he has already written the story, but the future promises to be even brighter.
