The outgoing mayor Giovanni Macrì, whose administration was dissolved due to mafia infiltration, announces his re-election as mayor of Tropea, the main tourist resort in Calabria. He does so through a press release in which he declares that he “is not eligible to run” and that the Municipality “does not run any risk of a new dissolution with his candidacy” in the May administrative elections.

«I feel supported by the majority of citizens»

«I would have preferred to make myself available to the city – states Macrì – as an outgoing and not dissolved mayor but, having overcome this phase, I feel supported by the majority of citizens and for this reason I am presenting myself again». The outgoing mayor adds: “I will soon be included in the list of unpresentables by the parliamentary anti-mafia commission but it is just a media ritual based on rules that would also fail in Iran and which have no value.”

The judgment of ineligibility and the sentence of the Council of State

Giovanni Macrì, near Forza Italia, is currently facing a mafia ineligibility judgment before the Court of Vibo Valentia. Last February, however, the Council of State confirmed the dissolution of the Municipality, led by Macrì, due to mafia infiltration. For the judges of Palazzo Spada, the support of the La Rosa clan in 2018 for Mayor Macrì and his list was “proven – we read in the sentence”.
