Calabria between signs of recovery and flight of talent: work is growing but the future is in the balance

Calabria is a line that retreats on the maps of the future. It is no longer just a demographic issue between empty cradles, aging countries, and habitual departures. The phenomenon goes deeper and tugs at the region’s productive heartstrings. Employment is growing here, but it is not enough. It improves, but it doesn’t hold back.

The numbers of the 37th Confartigianato report, on economic and economic trends, describe a paradox. In 2025 the employment rate in Calabria stops at 46.4%, which relegates the region to the last step of the national ranking. But it is up 1.6 points compared to the previous year. The employed increased by 3.8%, approximately 20 thousand units more, while the unemployment rate fell to 10.2%, with a significant drop (-3.2%) which represents the best national performance. Yet the gap remains clear with Italy (which runs at 62.5% employment) and the South itself (which stops at 50%).
