The hands that speak to the heart to learn that communicating means building bridges and not walls. This is the message at the center of the initiative dedicated to Italian Sign Language which on May 21st involved two sections of the nursery school of the Ic Catanzaro Mater Domini Nord Est Manzoni, directed by Professor Giulio Comerci.
The educational experience is part of the project “Social inclusion for the removal of barriers and the recognition and promotion of Italian Sign Language and the full accessibility of deaf people to collective life”, promoted by the Social Territorial Area of Catanzaro, the leading provincial municipality, and implemented by the Ens provincial section of Catanzaro led by president Serafino Mazza.
The workshop with children
The native speaker Lis Teresa Maiolo, the protagonist of the educational workshop “Let’s play and learn with Italian Sign Language”, guided the young students on this journey. Through games, colours, movement and practical activities, the children were able to approach a new way of communicating, coming into contact with the world of deaf people.
The initiative represented not only an educational moment, but also an opportunity to meet and discuss with a language capable of expressing emotions, needs and thoughts through gestures.
Inclusion and sensitivity
The project aims to develop sensitivity, empathy and respect for differences in children, promoting a culture of welcome and full inclusion. Knowing Lis right from nursery school means educating children on the value of accessible communication and the right of every person to be understood.
The Ic Catanzaro Mater Domini Nord Est Manzoni thus renews its educational mission, promoting paths that enhance diversity as a resource and favor full accessibility of deaf people to collective life.
