The Court of Castrovillari condemned the ASP of Cosenza for the serious and omitted preservation of the body of a woman, kept in the “Nicola Giannettasio” morgue of Rossano. The single judge Eduardo Bucciarelli recognized the exclusive responsibility of the ASP, ordering compensation for damages amounting to 40 thousand euros in favor of the deceased’s family. The case concerns an “anomalous and serious” preservation of the body. The legal case has its roots in September 2016, when a 76-year-old woman, originally from Longobucco, was found lifeless inside her home. Due to some suspicious elements found in the residence, the Prosecutor’s Office decided not to immediately close the case and ordered an autopsy to ascertain the real causes of death. The body was then transferred and taken over at the mortuary of the Rossana hospital. However, two days later, when it was time to carry out the autopsy, the medical examiner appointed by the magistrates found himself faced with a dramatic situation, as the woman’s body was in an advanced state of decomposition. The technical report highlighted that the temperature inside the cold room was between 35 and 40 degrees, a condition that favored the development of gas and necrophagous insects.
