An impressive joint operation has combed the territory of Cirò Marina and Torretta di Crucoli. The intervention is part of the national and transnational action plan “Focus ‘Ndrangheta”, established by order of the Police Commissioner of the Province of Crotone, Renato Panvino, following the guidelines drawn up in the Provincial Committee for public order and security, chaired by the Prefect Franca Ferraro. The activities, coordinated in the field by a State Police official, saw the synergistic use of men and means of the State Police, the Armed Forces of the Carabinieri, the Financial Police and the Port Authority. The checks focused both on the commercial network and on monitoring vehicular flows along the main road arteries.

Illegal betting and illegal workshops: details of the controls

The outcome of the administrative checks revealed various irregularities on the commercial and workplace safety front:

Betting and slot machines: The agents of the Administrative Police Division found, inside a bar with an adjoining betting corner, 3 gaming machines turned on and running at an unauthorized time. In addition to the financial penalty of 500 euros for each device (for a total of 1,500 euros), the owner was reported to the Judicial Authority for failure to comply with the Authority’s provisions.

Illegal mechatronics: The Traffic Police has discovered a completely illegal mechatronics activity. The workshop was stopped with the administrative seizure of all the equipment and a huge fine of 5,163 euros.

Auto parts and illegal work: At a second auto parts company the absence of the hazardous waste register was found, while in a third company the presence of an illegal worker was detected, a position that will trigger a report to the Labor Inspectorate.

Environmental and fish checks: Regular results, however, for the investigations of the Port Authority. The military verified compliance with environmental requirements in a place already sanctioned in the past and found the full regularity and traceability of fish products in two other commercial activities. During patrols in the area, the Police Officers also reported to the Prefecture a woman found in possession of 1 gram of hashish for personal use.

The overall numbers of the operation

The impact of the extraordinary control device is reflected in the overall numbers communicated by the police at the close of business. Over the course of the day, the synergistic action of the various departments made it possible to identify as many as 487 people, a widespread monitoring which brought to light the presence of 115 subjects already known to the police force databases due to various types of precedents.

In terms of road and traffic safety, the 23 checkpoints strategically located along the main communication routes allowed 296 vehicles to be checked. At the same time, the administrative focus took the form of in-depth inspections of 8 commercial activities in the area, while in terms of combating widespread crime, 16 targeted home checks were carried out on subjects subjected to measures restricting personal freedom.

“This high-impact intervention is part of a permanent strategy for territorial control”, the institutions say. “The objective is twofold: to prevent and repress crimes by guaranteeing legality in trade and transport, and to directly protect both citizens and honest economic operators who respect the rules of competition”.
