The illness in Paris seems to be a distant memory. On the grass of the Hurlingham Club in London Jannik Sinner found his smile and legs again: only one performance at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, in which however the world no.1 had no difficulty defeating the British Cameron Norrie in two sets (6-3 6-3). A comforting return after the shock match on May 28th on Parisian soil: in between there was rest and medical investigations to discover the reasons for that physical collapse. With Norrie Sinner it went smoothly.
“I’m feeling good on the pitches”
«I had never played here, but I really liked it. An exhibition match like this, with this atmosphere, can help me find the best form for Wimbledon – his words -. I’m feeling good on the pitches, there are some parts where it’s very fast, I’ll train again in the next few days, it will be important to find the right feeling.” The focus is naturally on the London slam, where Sinner arrives as the defending champion: in fact, a year ago the historic triumph of the blue who will try to defend the title. The start will be on Monday (the qualifiers for the main draw are already being played these days), and the draw for the main draw will take place on Friday. «The atmosphere is very nice. I thank everyone for coming, they help us find the right condition at these matches. Thinking about what happened last year and coming back here is very nice. The two weeks of Wimbledon meant a lot to me, but now we’re talking about another tournament: new year and other difficulties. I wish there was a very similar summary. I have always said that for me this is the most special tournament that exists.”
On Paris: “We could have managed a couple of things better, but incredible season so far”
Meanwhile, in these days that have accompanied his return to the field, Sinner has been monitored thoroughly: his glycemic values are monitored with the sensor on his arm and then all the precautions taken to deal with the great heat that is plaguing all of Europe, including London. During training, in addition to the ice on his head, Sinner wore a cooling jacket which absorbs excess heat and helps the body maintain the right temperature. To the Australians of Stan Sport, Sinner also spoke about what happened in Paris, admitting however that he had not yet clarified the origin of that illness: “It’s difficult to say. After Paris we looked into everything in depth, trying to understand if the same thing would have happened if I hadn’t played a couple of tournaments before. We don’t know, in the end every day is different and if you do a couple of things wrong on some days, you pay the price.” However, regarding physical resources, perhaps it could have been done differently: “We could certainly have managed a couple of things better, but I I also remember having had an incredible season up to this point”.
