A 23-year-old British influencer, Brooke George, risks the death penalty in Dubai, where she was arrested on charges of premeditated murder of her partner. The human rights organization Detained in Dubai is following the case, according to which the young woman acted in self-defense after being attacked. If convicted, under UAE law she would risk being shot.
The arrest at the airport
Originally from Gravesend, Kent, and a former John Lewis department store shop assistant before becoming famous on TikTok, George was stopped on June 22 by local police as she attempted to return to the UK from Dubai Airport. She is accused of stabbing the man – a 26-year-old compatriot she met online – at the height of a violent argument. She is detained in Bur Dubai Police Station.
The thesis of the defense: legitimate defense
According to the NGO and the family, the relationship – born after an acquaintance on social media – became controlling and violent during the young woman’s second trip to the Gulf. George would claim that she grabbed a kitchen knife and only reacted after being attacked, fearing for her safety. «Brooke – declared Radha Stirling, head of Detained in Dubai – claims to have acted only after having suffered a violent attack». Her mother, Thereza George, described her as “terrified” and with a swollen eye in the hours following the events.
Treatment complaints and appeal in London
The organization also denounces alleged violations of procedural protections: the young woman was apparently forced to undress in the presence of only male agents, she made statements without a lawyer and without consular assistance and she did not receive adequate explanations due to the language barrier. The family is calling for pressure from the British government, while the Foreign Office says it is in contact with the woman and her family to ensure maximum support.
