“Seeing President Occhiuto so tense and nervous in his latest social performance aroused displeasure and also a certain tenderness in us. A video that probably brings out the true face and real weaknesses of those who are unable to deal with those who have a different idea on the merits, and who in politics consider the opponent not as an interlocutor, but as an enemy to be insulted. In this scheme, it is not the one who argues best who wins, but the one who offends the most”. The minority councilors of the Calabria Regional Council wrote this in a note.

The accusation of lack of institutional grace

With this video, the councilors believe “rock bottom has been reached in terms of institutional respect and politeness, exceeding the limit of decency. It is the worst example that a representative of the institutions can give to young people and, in particular, to those who wish to approach politics out of civil passion, and not to participate in the “caciara” of the day”.

The comparison on the tones of the political debate

“We would like to remind our self-styled “Super President” that, in this and the last legislature, even in the face of the most sensational cases – including those linked to investigations which directly involve him – the opposition has always, and we always underline, maintained a serious and dignified tone. We did so out of respect for the institutions, roles and citizens of Calabria. This video, however, has absolutely nothing institutional about it. Rather, it seems like yet another episode of that typical attempt by the right to transform politics into a permanent brawl, where the one who raises his voice the loudest thinks he is right.”

The response to the insult on social media

According to the councillors, “it is also striking that the President goes so far as to define the representatives of the opposition as “losers”. Perhaps he considers himself very lucky to be President in Calabria; but the history of this region teaches that political luck always has an expiry date, while the problems left unresolved remain on the shoulders of the Calabrians”.

The issue of healthcare and the findings of the Court of Auditors

“Raising a media fuss, insulting the opposition and looking for a catchy title doesn’t move the real problem one millimetre. It’s embarrassing to try to muddy the waters by presenting everything as a simple problem between the Court of Auditors and Palazzo Chigi, almost as if it were an abstract issue that doesn’t concern Calabria. The request for new insights into the process for leaving the health commissioner comes directly from the Court of Auditors, an institutional body with precise control functions, and concerns the Calabria Region and all Calabrians. It is a post from the minority, it is not an opinion: it is an official act.”

The final appeal for serenity and transparency

Finally, some advice: “President, stay calm! We will continue to carry out our role with dignity and respect, honoring the citizens’ mandate. Don’t take it that way, getting angry isn’t good for you or for Calabria, which deserves more seriousness, more transparency and fewer video outbursts”.
