An airplane bomb, dating back to the Second World War, weighing 113 kilos and containing approximately 31 kilos of high explosive, was detonated by Army specialists after a delicate safety operation.
The bomb, of English manufacture, had been found in recent days in the territory of the municipality of Laureana di Borrello (Reggio Calabria) in the Vescovado district. The intervention was carried out during the night by specialists from the 21st Engineer Regiment of the “Garibaldi” Bersaglieri Brigade who operated in close coordination with the prefecture of Reggio Calabria and local authorities. The activities began in recent days with a preparatory phase, during which the device was made safe and the necessary excavations were carried out to prepare the area intended for the subsequent destruction of the bomb.
In a first phase, the bomb squad removed and destroyed the fuze on site, with a clearing radius of approximately 1,170 metres. Subsequently, the war residue was transported to a quarry, identified by the Prefecture, where it was definitively destroyed with a controlled blasting.
