More Blue Flags, a completely bathing sea and a coast finally enhanced from an environmental and tourist point of view. This is the challenge that the municipal administration of Reggio Calabria has decided to play on the topic of purification, considered by the mayor Francesco Cannizzaro one of the most important investments for the future of the city.

The occasion was the announcement of the start of work on the new Gallico purifier, a work that is part of a broader program of interventions intended to affect the entire metropolitan area.

Work on the Gallico purifier begins

The Gallico purifier represents one of the most important interventions included in the plan to modernize the Reggio purification network and, as illustrated during the meeting, it will be one of the most modern and high-performance plants in the entire system.

At the same time, the timetable of the other interventions already financed was also presented, with the aim of returning efficient and fully operational infrastructures to the communities involved.

Not just Reggio: the entire metropolitan area is involved

The programming does not only concern the city of the Strait. The mayor, in his capacity as metropolitan mayor, explained how the interventions will also affect numerous municipalities in the area.

These include San Roberto, Scilla, Motta San Giovanni, Santo Stefano in Aspromonte, Rizziconi and Oppido Mamertina, with different levels of progress but sharing a significant acceleration of administrative and technical procedures.

«For each municipality and for each plant we have given a timetable. Some are further along, others will need a little more time, but everyone has undergone a significant acceleration of the administrative and technical process”, explained Cannizzaro.

The objective is to make the entire Reggio coast suitable for swimming

The final goal, however, is much more ambitious than the simple completion of public works. In the mayor’s intentions, purification must become one of the main tools to relaunch tourism and the quality of life of citizens.

“I would like one day for the tourist who arrives, but also the citizen of Reggio, not to have to connect to the internet or look at the Municipality’s app to understand where they can or cannot swim”, declared Cannizzaro.

The idea is to arrive at a city in which the entire urban coastal stretch, from Catona to Bocale, can be fully usable and swimmable, becoming one of the main strong points of Reggio’s tourist offer.

«We want to make this entire area suitable for swimming, which from Catona to Bocale presents itself as an interesting and attractive area not only for the citizens of Reggio Calabria, but also for the many tourists», added the mayor.

A cleaner and more attractive city

The purification is part of a broader project to transform the city which, in recent weeks, has seen the launch of various interventions in terms of urban decoration, street cleaning, maintenance of public green areas and the strengthening of controls in the area.

“The city still doesn’t smell,” admitted Cannizzaro. «However, we are creating all the conditions for it to be able to do so in the near future».
