A hub of excellence for the study of astrophysics, the defense of national space assets and the development of frontier technologies with direct impacts on the industrial fabric. It is the project of a new laboratory resulting from the synergy between the University of Calabria and the National Institute of Astrophysics (Inaf), presented today at the Rende campus in the presence of the Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, the president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, the rector of Unical, Gianluigi Greco, and the president of Inaf, Roberto Ragazzoni.
The project also involves the installation at Unical of an antenna from the international ‘Solaris’ network intended for the study of plasma in the upper atmosphere. The center will also be part of the main international missions of the European Space Agency, including Plasma observatory, NewAthena and multimessenger astronomy research linked to the Einstein telescope and Lisa.
«Today – underlined the rector Gianluigi Greco – is a beautiful day for the university and for the institutions that have teamed up. We start immediately with a first room, set up for 20 people, with the medium-term goal of reaching 50 units. This means research, a growing economy and new families who choose to live and work in Calabria.”
The president of INAF, Roberto Ragazzoni, highlighted how the project represents «an onramp to create a scientific reference center with strong connections with the world of small and medium-sized enterprises, active in the production of high-tech components and sensors». From a logistical and employment point of view, the new structure is already ready to welcome the first researchers.

Research here becomes technological transfer to improve the quality of life for all of us, with applications ranging from medicine to manufacturing.” This was declared by the Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, on the sidelines of the visit to Unical for the presentation of the new astrophysics laboratory.
