«We have reached a point regarding the future of the Consortium for the Sicilian Motorways which no longer allows for postponements. The risk that the concession revocation procedure could be initiated is concrete and emerges from the documents of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. For this reason we have asked for an urgent hearing of the IV Commission of the ARS, to be held directly at the CAS headquarters in Messina”.
This was declared by Pippo Lombardo, regional deputy of South calls North, who intervenes after the discussion between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Consortium for Sicilian Motorways on the critical issues regarding the management and state of motorway infrastructures.
With the note dated 8 June 2026, the MIT contested a complex series of critical issues and non-compliances, also recalling problems that have arisen over the years and asking the Consortium for urgent feedback and compliance. The Ministry has also expressly stated that, in the absence of adequate responses, further decisions may be taken, until the concession forfeiture procedure is initiated.
«We are therefore not talking about an alarm constructed by politics», underlines Lombardo, «but about a question formally posed by the Ministry and in relation to which we need to understand what the will of the regional government is. We want to know if the Schifani Government really intends to maintain the management of the motorways through the CAS and, consequently, assume the responsibility of supporting the rehabilitation and adaptation process, or if it intends to let the situation evolve until the concession is lost”.
The CAS, in the feedback sent on 31 July, reconstructed the interventions already started and planned to overcome the disputed critical issues, while highlighting the need to address a particularly complex structural and financial framework. In fact, the Consortium estimates the need for the regulatory adaptation of the network at around 5.5 billion euros, with interventions on viaducts, tunnels and barriers, and indicates the need for a revision of the economic-financial plan.
