After the summer break, the Parco Romani issue could return to the city’s political table. Of all the ideas, more or less openly, that have come out over the last few years, none has managed to come to fruition. Yet the mega property is in the heart of a strategic area of the regional capital. Even more in view of the new city mobility, with the future intermodal hub of Sala which will become the cornerstone of the Catanzaro transport system.
The most recent idea to fade was that of the transformation into a covered cemetery, which would have made the building become a palace-chain of funeral services: it would have hosted from the niches to the crematorium, passing through commercial activities linked to the sector. The project presented at Palazzo De Nobili in the past months proved to be rather random and the administration preferred to immediately shelve the matter, which would certainly have been complicated to “digest”.
Not even the process started about two years ago by the Municipality with the Sistemi Urbani di Ferrovie dello Stato company has taken shape: the idea was very ambitious and was to give life to a system of car parks and also activities – linked to the metro line and the recovery of the old, now abandoned FS station – which could have supported a new vocation for Parco Romani: with the activation of the railway route to Germaneto, in fact, it would also have made sense to convert it into a student residence from which, in a few minutes thanks to the metro, we could have reached the university. But even this discussion, although undertaken, was not continued.
