The days that passed didn’t leave too many openings. And in fact, despite a certain optimism that transpired, in the end Jannik Sinner had to give up: he won’t be there at the US Open.
No last Slam of the season for the world tennis no.1 stopped by a problem with his right knee, evidently more serious than one could have imagined at the beginning. «Despite the hard work done by my team and the medical staff, we had to make the difficult decision not to participate in this year’s US Open – the announcement that many fans did not want to come -. We returned to training in Monte Carlo in the last few days and realized that we needed more time to recover from the right knee problem. I am obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York holds a special place in my heart.”
Sinner out from the Wimbledon triumph
Sinner hasn’t played since his second triumph at Wimbledon: knee discomfort then forced him to give up the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters, both stages of his approach to the American slam. And so Flushing Meadows – tournament starting from 30 August to 13 September – will be able to celebrate the great return to the field of Carlos Alcaraz and do without the no.1, promptly canceled from the official entry list of the Stars and Stripes Open: yes, because the Spaniard, stopped in the pits since April due to a wrist problem, has just announced that he will resume his race to return to no.1 on American hard courts. “I couldn’t wait to get back to playing in that electrifying atmosphere, in front of a fantastic audience”, the bitter words of Sinner who after his collapse at Roland Garros had said to listen and follow the body’s signals. After various therapies, including shock waves, Sinner had resumed training in the Principality since the beginning of the week, but not with the intensity suitable for preparing for the US Slam. The renunciation, even if the physical problem should not be serious, is with a view to preserving the athlete and avoiding worse relapses. Sinner, the first to win all the first five Masters 1000s of the season, became the second to have won them all at least once; he then won his second consecutive title at Wimbledon, but had to give up taking part in Montreal and Cincinnati: «It’s never easy to give up such an important event, but we believe it’s the best choice to preserve my physical health» he said before saying no to the Canadian 1000».
The discomfort in the right knee
«My right knee bothers me and, despite the hard work done, I have to accept that I am not yet ready to compete» the words of the withdrawal from the Masters in Ohio. “I really couldn’t wait to come back and play in its electrifying atmosphere, in front of the wonderful fans in New York,” says the world number 1 now, who in 2026 has won six titles and 44 of the 47 matches played. The empty box for the name Sinner in a Grand Slam tournament comes after 27 consecutive appearances of the blue Jannik in the main draws of the four seasonal Majors: since the 2019 US Open the South Tyrolean champion has always been at the start in Australia, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open. The program now involves staying in Europe and continuing his recovery with the medical staff and the staff dedicated to athletic training, with the aim of being ready for the Asian tour and the tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai. The top of the ranking doesn’t waver in America: Alcaraz, winner last year in New York, must repeat to avoid losing points and Sinner’s margin holds up at least until October.
