Calabria is a line that continues to retreat on the maps of the future. Every year the exodus of young people takes away a piece of it. The statistics tell what is now evident in the squares of small towns. A phenomenon that tugs at the productive heartstrings of the region because skills start. High school graduates, graduates and professionals leave. It’s the flight of talent. They leave because work here remains fragile, wages insufficient and opportunities too rare. Thus youth emigration has turned into the deepest wound: an exodus that takes away skills, impoverishes the social fabric and restricts the possibilities for the future of an entire region. This is the most difficult data to read in the migration statistics just published by Istat. Behind the numbers of those registered and removed from the municipal registers there is in fact a region that continues to lose residents to the rest of the country and, above all, a substantial part of its younger and more qualified population.
