In Italy the cost of managing a current account has risen by +23% in 10 years, and in the same period the value of household bank deposits has grown, reaching almost 1,163 billion euros in 2026, albeit with enormous differences across the territory. The data comes from Adusbef (Association for the Defense of Banking Services Users) which carried out a study to analyze the trend of current accounts in Italy. Based on the latest data from the Bank of Italy, the cost of managing a current account has risen by +23% in 10 years, going from an average of 82.2 euros to 101.1 euros (+18.9 euros) – explains the association – The increase is influenced in particular by variable expenses (bank transfers, payments, withdrawals, etc.), which show an increase of +34.2% (on average from 26.6 to 35.7 euros), with “expenses for provisions” alone growing in 10 years by +62.6%. Fixed expenses (fees, cards, etc.) recorded a smaller increase of +17.6%, going from 55.6 to 65.4 euros. The Adusbef study then analyzes the value of bank deposits, i.e. the sums that Italian families have available in their current accounts (excluding forms of remunerated or restricted liquidity). As of May 31, 2026, consumer families have a total of 1,163 billion euros in the bank, but the differences across the territory are very strong. Lombardy, with deposits of almost 239 billion euros, holds 20% of all the wealth deposited in Italian current accounts, followed at a huge distance by Lazio (122 billion) and Veneto (105 billion). Valle d’Aosta closes the ranking with around 2.8 billion.
The value of current accounts in relation to the population
However, if we consider the value of current accounts in relation to the population residing in the various areas of Italy, we discover that the “richest” province in terms of money deposited in the bank is Bolzano, with an average of almost 30,400 euros per capita, followed by Milan (27,900 euros per resident), Piacenza (26,800 euros), Sondrio (26,000) and Belluno (25,650) – highlights Adusbef. The province with the lowest current accounts is Crotone, with an average of 9,679 euros per resident, followed by Sassari (9,741 euros) and Nuoro (approximately 10,600 euros). In nominal terms, the value of deposits in current accounts has grown by +28.3% in 10 years, going from approximately 906 billion in May 2026 to the current 1,163 billion, but in the same period the overall inflation was equal to 23.6%: net of this component, the increase in “wealth” stops at +4.7%. Trentino Alto Adige marks the highest nominal increase, equal to +43.2% between 2016 and 2026, followed by Sardinia (+42.7%) and Friuli Venezia Giulia (+39.7%). Bottom line is Marche (+10.6%) and Liguria (+14.5%). it is the result of renouncing consumption and a prudential attitude. It is essential that the banking system valorises these savings with transparent conditions and adequate remuneration, protecting consumers and at the same time supporting confidence in the economy”, concludes the president of Adusbef, Antonio Tanza.
