A thin band of sea fog made its appearance in the late afternoon at Torre Faro, on the Strait. The phenomenon, which lasted just over a minute, is compatible with the so-called “sea dog”, the advection fog that forms when warm, humid air flows over colder waters and cools until it reaches the dew point, causing the condensation of water vapor.
In the Strait of Messina the process can be favored by upwelling, the rising of deep waters which during the summer contributes to keeping the sea surface significantly colder than the surrounding waters. The brief apparition was observed by the numerous bathers still present on the beach of Capo Peloro.
