Serious traffic disruptions along the A2 “Mediterranean Motorway”. Due to the overturning of a heavy vehicle which occurred at km 208.00, in the municipal area of Saracena (in the province of Cosenza), traffic is currently blocked in a southerly direction in the stretch between the Frascineto and Sibari junctions.
An articulated lorry consisting of a tractor and trailer was involved in the accident, both overturned. The driver of the vehicle, a man of around 50 years of age, was injured and, after initial treatment, was entrusted to the 118 medical staff and transported to hospital by air ambulance.
Following the accident, a vegetation fire also broke out along the embankment adjacent to the motorway. The flames were promptly tackled and brought under control by the fire brigade teams, avoiding further spread of the fire.
The teams of the Fire Brigade from the Castrovillari Detachment and the Mormanno Fire Brigade Rural Presidio intervened on site, engaged in rescue operations, making the affected area safe and in the activities following the accident.
To allow emergency vehicles to carry out vehicle recovery operations, a mandatory exit has been arranged at the Frascineto junction. Vehicles heading south are temporarily diverted along the local network – through the provincial roads SP 263 and SP 241 – to then be able to return to the motorway at the Sibari junction.
Slowdowns and queues are also recorded in the north direction, in the opposite stretch between Sibari and Frascineto. Anas personnel are already operational on site, present with the emergency teams to manage the critical road network, coordinate the removal of the vehicle and proceed in the shortest possible time to restore normal circulation.
Given the complexity of the intervention and the operations still underway for the recovery of the articulated lorry and the restoration of safety conditions, the road system may undergo further changes, including any changes in the carriageway in relation to any critical issues that may emerge. The operations could continue until late afternoon. Also present were ANAS, roadside assistance and traffic police personnel.
