New front open for Matteo Salvini: a group of former parliamentarians and provincial secretaries would in fact want control of the old Northern League and for this reason they created the Committee for the convocation of the federal congress, as Sky Tg24 and then Corriere della Sera anticipated. Among the promoters of the initiative is Gianluca Pini, a former parliamentarian who left the Northern League but is still on the federal council of the Northern League, a structure that remained alive after 2017 as a sort of bad company, to pay the 49 million that he must return to the State. The aim of the congress would be to ‘snatch’ the Northern League from the control of the current commissioner Igor Iezzi, very loyal to Salvini.

Fountain throws water on the fire

“I also heard about this initiative, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion we are carrying on with Salvini.” This is the response of the president of the Lombardy Region Attilio Fontana to those who ask him about the initiative of some former parliamentarians of the Northern League who created the Committee for the convocation of the federal congress. Fontana, on the sidelines of the presentation of the Monza GP, confirms that he will meet Matteo Salvini: «We try to match the agendas. On Sunday we hope to celebrate the Grand Prix together. Then we also hope for something more, given that we have two opportunities this year.”

“Surprise for those calling for the return of the Northern League”

«Surprise, in the League and in the entourage of secretary Salvini, for those who today ask for a congress for the return to the ‘Northern League’. Those who risked killing the League are now showing up again in search of a seat. Are those who have settled for corruption also willing to take full responsibility for the 49 million debts that the League inherited for Salvini Premier and which it is still paying?”. League sources made this known, underlining that “the North is asking for solutions, answers and concreteness, which the government is also providing thanks to the push of the League and its five Lombard ministers”.

«There is a League that works, with over 500 mayors, governors, thousands of local administrators throughout Italy, tens of thousands of members, elected representatives and militants. There is a League that is working to organize a two-day event in Rome on 8-9 September on economic issues in view of the maneuver and for a Pontida with record numbers. And then there are those who spend their time amidst controversies and appeals, thinking more about their own interest than that of the territory”, highlight Matteo Salvini’s party.
