An earthquake was clearly felt this evening, 4 September 2026, at 9.31 pm, in the province of Cosenza. According to provisional estimates released by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the magnitude of the earthquake is 3.7 and the epicenter was located in Castiglione Cosentino, in the province of Cosenza, at a depth of 9 km.
Great fear among the population who felt the shock, particularly in Castiglione, Cosenza, Rende, Montalto Uffugo and throughout the Crati Valley, with people pouring into the streets, particularly in open spaces as required by the safety protocols, and numerous calls to the Fire Brigade switchboards. The superficial nature of the shock explains why the tremor was felt so clearly and strongly throughout the province of Cosenza and surrounding areas.
Right now, checks are underway by the Civil Protection, given the magnitude and the shallowness above the ground even if, at the moment, there has been no damage to people or things. The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, explained to Ansa that in the next few hours reconnaissance and checks will be carried out in collaboration with the Civil Protection.
