An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 was recorded this afternoon in the Cosentino area. According to data from the INGV Seismic Room in Rome, the event occurred at 3.47 pm, with the epicenter identified seven kilometers east of Aprigliano and the hypocenter at 16 kilometers depth. In the first hours that followed, no consequences to people or things were reported.
Where the epicenter was located
The coordinates indicated by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology are 39.2503 latitude and 16.4262 longitude, in an inland area between the Crati valley and the slopes of Sila. The point is about 15 kilometers east of Cosenza, 32 kilometers north of Lamezia Terme, 41 kilometers north-west of Catanzaro and 63 kilometers west of Crotone.
The intermediate depth of 16 kilometers helps to attenuate the effects on the surface. Within a few kilometers of the epicenter there are, in addition to Aprigliano, the towns of Pietrafitta, Casali del Manco, Figline Vegliaturo, Cellara, Piane Crati, Mangone, Spezzano della Sila and Celico.
Three days ago the magnitude 3.7 earthquake
The event comes a few days after a stronger earthquake in the same province. On Friday 4 September, at 9.31pm, a magnitude 3.7 shock with a hypocenter nine kilometers deep was located in the Castiglione Cosentino area. It had been clearly felt in the capital and in several municipalities in the Crati valley, with many people taking to the streets, but even in that case no damage had been reported.
