An army of “ghosts”. “Ghosts” who no longer go to school, do not follow university courses and have said “no” to training. They are the “work illiterates” who no longer believe in the possibility of finding a job. Pockets of NEET (English acronym for “Not in Education, Employment or Training”) stagnate in every corner of cities and small villages, configuring an alarming overall regional figure certified by the Sole 24 Ore investigation, elaborated on data from the Dedalo Laboratory of the Gi Group Foundation. Numbers that define a reality that forces us to change perspective. In 2025, 24.3% of young Calabrians, between 15 and 34 years old, are simultaneously outside the circuits of legal employment, education and training. Almost one in four under 35s. In Italy, only Campania and Sicily fare worse. The national average stops at 15.6%, the European one at 12%.
The Neet is not necessarily a young person who “does not want to work”. It may simply be the end product of a sequence of doors left closed.
