The cloud of acrid smoke that filled the Sansinato tunnel is only a faded memory, dispersed by fans and the late morning wind. Around 12.45pm, the SS 280 began flowing regularly again, leaving the chaos of the previous hours behind.
It all started around 10.30am, when a car, suddenly engulfed in flames while proceeding towards Catanzaro, transformed the tunnel into a trap of fire and smoke. However, the timely intervention of the firefighters of the provincial command had avoided the worst: the teams put out the fire in record time and made the area safe, avoiding dramatic consequences. The best news, which came immediately after the shutdown, was that no one was injured or seriously affected.
Inconveniences to traffic were inevitable, with the state road initially closed to allow rescue operations, followed by a slow partial reopening after about thirty minutes and the full restoration of traffic in the early afternoon. An emergency handling managed in synergy with the Traffic Police and ANAS staff, who had put the road section back on track, restoring normality to the many stranded motorists.
