Bringing the municipalities to the center of the political agenda and bridging the gap with the Roman palaces. With this objective, “Mayors of Italy”, the movement born in Assisi which unites local administrators from across the country, was presented to the Sicilian Regional Assembly.

The Sicilian founders illustrated the project Paolo Amenta (mayor of Canicattini Bagni and president of ANCI Sicily) e Gianni Pino (mayor of San Filippo del Mela).

Amenta started from the distance between Rome and the territories: “We can safely say that the municipalities have become the periphery of the State”. Hence the proposal: “This movement tries to overturn the pyramid. Let’s start from the needs of citizens, businesses, the real territory, to then make them become the norm and financial coverage”.

Pino insisted on the mayor’s role as the first institutional safeguard: “If there is no water they call the mayor, whatever happens they call the mayor”. A role that the party wants to make aware and recognised: “We solve the problems or not, but we are close to the citizens”.

“The municipalities are the periphery of the state”

The movement aims to “overturn the pyramid”, starting from the real needs of citizens – from emergency management to prevention – to transform them into concrete rules and resources. Among the first battles on the island, the one for the third mandate in municipalities with up to 15,000 inhabitants stands out, permitted in the rest of Italy but not in Sicily. The objective is to give the territories a voice by running for office in the next elections to bring local administrators into Parliament, the ARS and governments, acting as a real “territorial lobby” disconnected from traditional powers.

The rooting process continues with the appointment scheduled for October 21st at 10am at ARSwhere the new memberships of mayors, administrators and former local administrators will be presented.
