The US is trying to relaunch negotiations to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine, which in recent days has seen mutual bombings multiply and which, according to the alarm raised by Washington, risks expanding dangerously.
A Ukrainian delegation is scheduled for talks Friday and Saturday in Miami with U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who visited Moscow and Kiev last month. While the Kremlin has announced that a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump is scheduled “soon”.
“I have just concluded a very successful discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global markets, another 500,000 tons in November and 1,000,000 tons immediately thereafter.” Donald Trump states this on his social network Truth, underlining that “furthermore, based on the capacity of their refineries, Russia will deliver, in a short time, an additional 3,000,000 tons of diesel”.
Witkoff and Kushner, American sources quoted by the AFP agency report, intend to develop a common proposal to achieve peace, discussing it with the Ukrainians and European envoys. For this reason, the national security advisors of Great Britain, France and Germany were also invited to the talks, together with representatives of NATO and the European Union. For Kiev there are the head of the presidential office, Kyrylo Budanov, and the head of intelligence, Rustem Umerov.
Washington’s initiative follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statements on Thursday that hostilities have reached potentially explosive levels, with the danger of serious escalation. “We don’t think there is a military solution to the conflict”, underlined the head of US diplomacy.
Furthermore, Kiev is preparing to face another winter that promises to be the harshest since the beginning of the war, after having been hammered for weeks by Russian missiles and drones that targeted infrastructure, logistics centers, industries and ports on the Black Sea. The raids, underlined President Volodymyr Zelensky, have caused “considerable damage” to the national electricity grid and “restoration work continues day and night”.
According to AFP’s American sources, among the ideas discussed in Florida will be a partial ceasefire with the suspension of raids on energy infrastructures and cargo ships exporting grain. But the security guarantees that Ukraine requires to achieve peace will also be under discussion. Moscow has always declared itself against sectoral and temporary truces, saying it wants to reach a peace treaty that provides “a solution for future generations”, as Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said again on Thursday.
Putin should talk about all this in the telephone conversation with Trump announced by Peskov himself. While in recent days the US president had also said that he would soon speak with the head of the Kremlin regarding the alleged death of a researcher from the plague in Siberia. Peskov also assured that Witkoff and Kushner “are always welcome in Moscow” and Putin “is always happy to meet them.”
