“The Scurria council group asks the mayor and the council to take immediate action to guarantee a month of free public transport in Messina, through ATM buses and tram replacement services, with an extraordinary increase in travel. The motion will be tabled tomorrow in the city council.
The Municipality – we read in a note from the council group headed by the centre-right candidate in the recent municipal elections – cannot lower the price of fuel, but it can immediately reduce the cost of travel. The request is clear: a month of free buses to concretely help families, workers and students deal with the high cost of fuel.
In Reggio Calabria the Administration led by Mayor Cannizzaro has already provided eight days of free access. Messina can do more, considering a month-long intervention to support citizens. In the last three years ATM has paid approximately 1.7 million euros in taxes. A fact that recalls the function of a public company: not to pursue profits as an end in themselves, but to guarantee accessible services and return value to the community. It is therefore necessary to immediately verify the resources available to make this proposal concrete.
We ask the mayor and the council to act without delay: if we cannot lower the price of fuel, let us reduce the cost of travel. One month of free public transport, immediately, in the interest of the people of Messina”
