Center-left in the square in front of the presidency of the Sicilian Region, to ask for the resignation of governor Renato Schifani. Present were the representatives of M5s, Pd, Controcorrente, Progetto civico Italia, Casa reformista, +Europa +Uno, Sinistra italiana, Europa Verde, Psi, Sinistra Futura, Spazio Civico, Possibile, Per, but also a pendulum clock, symbol of the latest investigation by the Palermo prosecutor’s office which would have revealed a further system of corruption; The main suspect is the former vice-president of the Region and former president of the specialist technical commission for environmental authorisations, Gaetano Armao, who, according to the prosecution, hid alleged bribes inside a grandfather clock.
The street protest organized by the center-left is also a clash of images. And so if the Democratic Party and 5 Stars released an avalanche of videos and photos to document Schifani’s request for resignation, Palazzo d’Orleans responded by circulating via WhatsApp a photo taken from above – an hour before the start of the demonstration – in which a less than massive participation can be seen.
In any case, the protest has reunited the centre-left, which has been divided for months over the names to be nominated for the Palazzo d’Orleans and even over the method for choosing them (primaries or agreement between parties). Irony was also an accomplice, which pushed the 5 Star Movement to bring a pendulum clock under Palazzo d’Orleans: a clear reference to the symbolic photo of the investigation involving Armao.
«There is not a good and a bad right as we would like to believe in order to replace Schifani with another name drawn from the deck of parties that support this government and condemn Sicily to another 5 years of Purgatory, to say the least. The scandals of recent years have overwhelmed the entire centre-right, so everyone must go home so that Sicily can finally turn the page once and for all”, said the regional coordinator of the M5s Nuccio Di Paola in Piazza Indipendenza, in front of the door of the Presidency of the Region, and which saw the participation of regional deputies, city and district councillors, former mayors, activists and sympathizers of all the alternative realities to the centre-right.
At the center of the demonstration, in fact, was that pendulum, icon of the latest scandal: «We are tired of scandals and investigations that now overwhelm the center-right with worrying and shameful repetitiveness. It’s time to free the Sicilians and give them back that hope in the future that they are unable to have today, crushed as they are by high fuel prices, by the loss of purchasing power, by a healthcare system that doesn’t allow everyone to get treatment. And while the Sicilians don’t know how to move forward, there are 50 million euros blocked in this maneuver for the electoral campaign of the majority deputies, for the immortal bribes. We will do everything we can to ensure that this money goes to those who really need it, such as citizens damaged by tornadoes.”
«Schifani resign: this is the cry of the square today in Palermo, in front of Palazzo d’Orleans, against the government of nothing – reiterated the regional secretary of the Democratic Party, Anthony Barbagallo – which in recent years has not solved any of the region’s problems and has been overwhelmed by the scandals of its magic circle and by the action of its government. A season is over and Schifani must draw the consequences.”
