A tragedy occurred late yesterday afternoon in the countryside of Roggiano Gravina, in the Santa Lucia district, in the municipality of Cosentino. A 12-year-old girl, Miryam A., died crushed by the weight of a tractor in the Lago dell’Esaro area. According to an initial reconstruction, the little girl was on board the agricultural vehicle together with her father, a 50-year-old farmer, when, for reasons still being ascertained, she lost her balance and fell to the ground, ending up under the wheels. Help was immediately available, but there was nothing that could be done for the young woman. The carabinieri of the Compagnia di San Marco Argentano intervened on site for the findings and reconstruction of the dynamics and the medical examiner.
Miryam, a second class student at the Roggiano Gravina middle school, appears to have been sitting on the front platform, near the wheel arch. Her father would have noticed what had happened only a few moments later, when any attempt to save her would have been useless.
The alarm immediately triggered rescue. Two ambulances arrived on site, while the air ambulance also intervened from above. The health workers could not help but confirm the death of the very young girl.
The judicial authority will now decide whether further investigations will be necessary on the twelve-year-old’s body, including the possibility of ordering an autopsy. The date of the funeral will also depend on this decision.
The news spread quickly in the village, passing from phone to phone and leaving room only for disbelief and tears.
The mayor of Roggiano Gravina, Francesco Zappone, went to the site of the accident to express the closeness of the municipal administration and the entire community to the family, while as the minutes passed numerous people gathered, arriving to show affection and offer comfort to the family. The father is in shock.
