“It is a cry of pain and freedom, these are the words that I feel I must pronounce, without hesitation, in the aftermath of an ambush which, due to its methods and ferocity, makes the signature of the ‘ndrangheta very evident and recognisable”. The mayor of Cassano all’Ionio intervenes firmly on the murder that shocked his municipality this evening, with the killing of the wife of the boss Pepe, who instead escaped the ambush and is still hospitalized at the Annunziata in Cosenza.
“In the face of this, in the face of a trail of blood that is lengthening, prevention, training and socio-economic development remain indispensable and fundamental. However, equally important, and certainly urgent, is a response made up of even more intense control of the territory by the police, of increasingly rapid and incisive judicial action, of a more visible and effective civil commitment. Already in the next few hours I will formally ask the Prefect to convene the Committee for public order and safety, for the adoption of every measure useful and appropriate, while on Monday afternoon, together with the bishop, Monsignor Francesco Savino, we will promote a public assembly to discuss what happened and, above all, the initiatives to be taken. Together, all together, to reaffirm a principle, a necessity, a cry: hands off the city”.
