The serious accident that cost the life of eighteen-year-old Edoardo brings attention back to State Road 113, in the stretch between San Martino, San Gregorio and the Marmoro district, the scene of numerous accidents over the years, some of which were fatal. A sequence of episodes involving motorists and motorcyclists, with sometimes dramatic consequences. The most painful precedent for the young man’s family dates back to December 2013, when Roberto Ratto, known as Gino, Edoardo’s father, lost his life at the age of 33 in a head-on collision between his motorbike and a car, near the San Martino junction. According to the reconstruction reported in the news of the time, the impact occurred at the height of the curve that leads onto the straight stretch of the Milio stream.

A few months earlier, in March 2013, again in the San Gregorio Alto area, another head-on collision between a Renault Clio and a Mercedes Class A had left three injured, one of whom was in serious condition due to chest trauma and several fractures. In June 2016, a violent head-on collision in the Marmoro district involved two cars. The drivers, a young man from Capo d’Orlando and a woman from Castell’Umberto, were both seriously injured and were transferred to the Sant’Agata Militello hospital.

In February 2023, still in Marmoro, a collision involved four vehicles, including two cars and two vans. Two people were injured, fortunately without serious consequences. The toll of the accident in December of the same year was much heavier, when Carmelo Masi, a 60-year-old entrepreneur from Brolo, lost his life. The man was driving his Audi A1 when he was involved in a collision with a heavy vehicle. His wife, who was traveling with him, suffered serious injuries. The accident also made it necessary to restore the road surface, damaged by the consequences of the impact and by the fire that broke out in the truck.

In September 2024, at kilometer 103+800, at the intersection with the former State Road 113 in the Marmoro district, a collision between a Fiat Panda, in which a woman was traveling with her two children aged 7 and 9, and a Peugeot 2008 resulted in the injury of the four people involved, who were transported to hospital for checks. Two other accidents occurred in 2025 precisely in the area of the Antinori viaduct. In June, a collision involving four vehicles, including a motorcycle, caused the centaur to be injured. In December, however, three vehicles were involved in an impact which caused four injuries, none of whom were in serious condition.

Episodes with different dynamics and consequences, united by the need to maintain high attention on safety along a fundamental artery for connections between Capo d’Orlando and Brolo. Tonight’s fatal accident adds a new, dramatic chapter to a news story which, over the years, has already recounted the consequences of clashes along this stretch of road too many times.
