Maintenance and safety interventions – the need for which had already been highlighted in the reports that the engineer. Placido Migliorino had carried out on behalf of the MIT – they will affect the A18 Messina-Catania motorway.
The Consortium for the Sicilian Motorways has arranged a series of changes to the road system to allow the execution of works in the tunnels and the restoration of the damaged safety barriers.
The first provision will come into force at 7am on 1 October and will remain in force until 9pm on 28 November 2026. In the stretch between km 8+900 and km 12+368, the mountain road, towards Catania, will be closed to traffic. At the same time, two-way traffic will be established on the opposite carriageway, towards Messina. The interventions concern ordinary maintenance and urgent safety measures for the tunnels managed by the CAS. A second measure will instead affect a much larger stretch of the motorway.
From 7am on 2 October 2026 to 7pm on 28 March 2027, urgent and indeferrable work will be carried out to restore the safety conditions of the original safety barriers involved in the accident. The roadway will be partitioned, with the alternate closure of the emergency, driving or overtaking lane, based on operational needs. The limitations will concern the stretch between km 0+000 and km 76+860, in both directions, including junctions and related appurtenances. The work can take place both during the day and at night.
For the entire duration of the limitations, a maximum speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour and a ban on overtaking will also be established in the sections affected by construction sites.
