The former municipal administrators of Rende sent a letter to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and to the Minister of the Interior Matteo planted, with the aim not only to attract attention to the consequences of the dissolution of the city council, arranged on June 27, 2023 for alleged mafia infiltrations, but also to solicit an assumption of responsibility by the high offices of the State.
A provision that, to the trial of the courts, proved to be without foundation: full acquittal, “because the fact does not exist”, in fact he restored the truth, certifying the inconsistency of the accusations. But in the meantime – the former administrators denounce – the damage for the community and for the credibility of the institutions was enormous. The memory of that season is engraved in the memory: 1 September 2023, at three in the morning, the night churored by the sirens, the helicopters, all the law enforcement officers – carabinieri, police, finance guard – as if to according to a band of dangerous evildoers. “Instead it was our city, its administrators, its democracy that was overwhelmed,” they underline.
The letter addressed to the Quirinale and the Interior Ministry states: “With the decree that ordered the dissolution, the popular sovereignty of our community was suspended, interrupting the legitimate democratic representation of a community that operated with commitment, transparency and dedication”. And again, it is highlighted: “Prevention cannot replace justice or administrative speed can trample on the political rights of the communities”.
The former administrators then launch a message to politics: «In our land we witness too many times the use of judicial dark as a tool to break down their competitors. A similar method not only weakens democracy, but he poisons it at the root ». Finally, a direct recall to the institutions: “The state must know how to defend the territories from the mafia, but must also know how to recognize and correct their mistakes, restoring dignity to those who have been unjustly overwhelmed”. And it is reiterated: “The credibility of the Republic, respect for the constitution and the trust of citizens in the institutions depend on the ability of the state not only to act firmly, but also to recognize their mistakes, correct them and protect, without exception, any form of democratic representation”.
