The increase in routes (net of those canceled in Reggio), the exponential growth in the overall number of passengers, the new departures terminal at “Tito Minniti” and the infrastructural improvement in Lamezia: the season of relaunch for Calabrian airports, and in particular that of the Strait, is in the numbers. But at what price? The accounts, and these are also numbers, are intertwined between documents published on the Region and Sacal websites, questions from the minority in the Regional Council and elaborations of the specialized website airporticalabria.com. A chiaroscuro picture emerges, which paints a system governed – to date – by incentives with public funding, especially in Reggio where Ryanair covers almost all the routes and the real challenge will be to attract new low cost airlines also thanks to the maxi-plan of works announced on Thursday (64 million euros between CIS “Volare” and “Cannizzaro amendment”).
One fact stands out above all: if 2025 has certified a strong increase in traffic (Lamezia exceeds 3 million, for Reggio a historical record), according to airportscalabria each new traveler cost around 48 euros, a sum which would be far higher than the national average of around 10 euros per passenger.
