A very hard blow to the drug dealing market and to the criminal organizations that manage drug trafficking in Calabria. In the last two months, the soldiers of the Regional Command of the Financial Police of Catanzaro, supported by the territorial departments and specialist components, conducted a vast territorial control operation which led to the identification and seizure of 19 cannabis indica plantations.

5500 plants hidden in the most inaccessible areas of Calabria

The crops, for a total of 5,550 plants, were well hidden in the most inaccessible and mountainous areas of the region. By exploiting the dense vegetation and the particular morphology of the Calabrian territory – combined with ideal climatic conditions for this type of crop – the criminal organizations hoped to make large-scale production go unnoticed.

A turnover of over 8 million

According to investigators’ estimates, once fully ripe, dried and packaged, the plants would have placed hundreds of kilos of narcotic substance on the market. The turnover stolen from organized crime is close to an enormous figure: over 8.3 million euros of illicit profits eliminated by the intervention of the Fiamme Gialle.

The operation is part of the extraordinary monitoring and prevention plan implemented by the Financial Police to monitor the areas most at risk in the territory, reconfirming the central role of the Corps in combating illegality and drug trafficking in Calabria.
