All six minority councilors of the Municipality of Isola Capo Rizzuto (Crotone) resigned from their positions this afternoon. A decision, they said, taken due to the lack of responses to the dialogue by the majority on anti-mafia access to the Municipality. The resigners are Maurizio Piscitelli and Francesca Iannone of Forza Italia, Francesco Asteriti for the civic «Isola Prima di Tutto», Andrea Filici for the Democratic Party, and Rosy Pugliese and Luigina Vallone in the Fratelli d’Italia quota. Last August 11, on the orders of the prefect of Crotone Franca Ferraro, the anti-mafia access commission was established in the Town Hall to ascertain any influence of organized crime, a measure connected to the Blizzard-Folgore, Libeccio and Krimata investigations. The resignation was announced through a series of press notes.
The FI and Isola Prima di Tutto groups specified that the decision “does not arise from the desire to replace the investigators or to anticipate their conclusions”, but from the belief that “coherence must always apply”. A principle also supported by Fdi, according to which «the mayor and the current administration must evaluate with a sense of responsibility the possibility of taking a step back, not as an admission of faults that no one can attribute today, but as an exclusively political choice to protect Isola».
The Democratic Party, which denounced the administration’s silence, explained that the resignation was “above all a choice made after having asked the majority for a discussion which, once again, they decided to postpone”. Mayor Maria Grazia Vittimberga, former Democratic Party and head of a civic council, in recent days, responding to various press releases, rejected the idea of leaving the town hall, defining the prefectural checks as “a verification and control activity required by law”, reassuring us of the “good faith of our actions”. «This Administration does not intend to take a single step back from the mandate received from the citizens» he said, branding the opposition’s request as a «sterile political maneuver useful perhaps to gain some titles, but certainly not to protect Isola di Capo Rizzuto».
