“The Melito Porto Salvo hospital, which over the years has represented a central hub for healthcare in the Greek area and the entire province of Reggio Calabria, continues to play a strategic role in regional healthcare planning. The Provincial Healthcare Authority of Reggio Calabria has already started and will continue to implement an important process of strengthening hospital and local services. Further investments have been planned for the renovation of the Oncology department, with works already approved for approximately 500 thousand euros from the company budget, for the construction of the new emergency room and for the consolidation of the surgery, medicine, rehabilitation and gynecology activities”. Thus in a note Maddalena Berardi, general director of the provincial health authority of Reggio Calabria.

Hiring and investing in big tech

“At the same time, we are working on strengthening local services, with particular attention – he continued – to consultancy activities and services aimed at the health needs of the most vulnerable subjects, in particular children and the elderly. The numbers clearly demonstrate the work carried out. As of 31 December 2025, the balance between staff hired and terminated, between the sector and management, is positive for 152 units. Between 2022 and 2025, over 3 million have been invested euros in major healthcare technologies, electro-medical equipment and extraordinary maintenance interventions. Since May 2022, 321 new technological devices have been tested for a total asset value of almost 1.9 million euros. Among the most significant interventions are the strengthening of the operating block with new anesthesia equipment, a new operating table, an operating microscope for ophthalmology, a new autoclave and the strengthening of equipment for gastroenterology”.

Advanced diagnostics and digitalisation of departments

Berardi highlighted that “the sterilization area of the facility has also been completely reorganised. For the various departments, seven new latest generation ultrasound machines have been acquired, financed through the Pnrr and the regional operational programme, while another two ultrasound machines will be delivered and tested in the next few days. Radiology has been equipped with a new digital radiological device and a three-dimensional orthopantomograph, with the simultaneous modernization of the diagnostic rooms. The new area dedicated to mammography, where a digital mammograph with tomosynthesis and stereotactic system will be installed by July. The executive project for the new computerized axial tomography has been approved and the necessary regional and ministerial measures are awaited for the start of the work. The new IT system for the management and archiving of radiological images has also been fully digitalised, with the sending of all reports to the electronic health record and the Short Intensive Observation have been equipped with new equipment for monitoring patients and interventions have been carried out to adapt the spaces, pending the complete renovation of the area”.

Integration between hospital and territory: the Community Houses

Furthermore, the renovation project of the Oncology department was approved, already equipped with ten new treatment chairs, with the aim of starting work within the year. The transfer of specialist activities from the headquarters of the former National Institute for Disease Insurance to the new Roghudi Community House, already operational and validated at ministerial level, must also be considered a growth opportunity for the territory. It is a modern structure, inserted in an integration model between hospital and territory which today represents one of the most effective tools for creating local healthcare, understood not only as geographical proximity but also as the ability to respond more effectively to people’s needs, as well as that of the Bova Marina Community Hospital, is the result of a planning process started in 2021 and 2022 as part of the Pnrr and ministerial decree no. 77 of 2022 new model of territorial assistance”.

The value of facts and the rejection of controversy

“These are the facts, these are the numbers – concluded Berardi – and this is the work that the Provincial Health Authority of Reggio Calabria has already carried out and will continue to carry forward. With respect for the institutions and local communities, discussion and dialogue will always be sought and practiced. Otherwise, requests formulated through phantom ultimatums, which go beyond the normal and correct institutional discussion, cannot contribute to the solution of the problems and, precisely for this reason, will not have any particular consideration”.
