Traffic is the most critical issue in the bad weather emergency in the Catanzaro area, where landslides and flooding are bringing the road network to its knees. Dozens of roads were affected by landslides or made impassable, with serious repercussions on travel in several areas of the province.
The picture emerged during the meeting called by the prefect Castrese De Rosa, in the presence of the mayors, the leaders of the police forces and the competent bodies. Numerous municipal and provincial roads are closed or difficult to travel on, with particularly evident critical issues in the territories of Marcedusa and in the internal areas, including the Reventino area.
Impossible roads and flooded waterways
The greatest difficulties are recorded along the secondary roads, where landslides have made circulation impossible in several sections. Making the situation worse is the condition of some waterways which, following the floods, have caused significant hydraulic damage.
The teams of the provincial command of the Catanzaro fire brigade are involved in the area, carrying out around 60 interventions, mainly concentrated on flooding and landslides, as emerged during the meeting in the Prefecture.
Sports facilities closed and race postponed
In the meantime, Mayor Nicola Fiorita, with his own ordinance, has ordered the closure of all public sports facilities of all types and categories, including those entrusted to third parties under concession or management. The measure is part of the orange weather alert and the persistent adverse conditions, characterized by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
The measure was also adopted in consideration of the possible dangerous situations for public and private safety and the difficulties in traveling, in particular in reaching sports facilities by public and private transport. The Ceravolo stadium is also among the structures affected, resulting in the postponement of the match between Catanzaro and Modena scheduled for 8pm.
