Black pork of the Nebrodi, the process for the recognition of the DOP brand is underway

First step to obtain the recognition of the protected denomination of origin (DOP) for the fresh and transformed meats of black pig of the Nebrodi. But also the protected geographical indication (PGI) of the Sicily hazelnut.
The two excellence of the agri-food sector have been included in the dossier for the application for recording of the DOP and PGI, which includes the technical-scientific documentation of the two products, as part of the Gal (Local Action Group) of the Nebrodi Plus, which collected the requests from the territory and created an internal working group spokesmen of the needs that the production sector awaited for decades.
The request was sent to the ministerial and regional authorities who will have to, once the registration application is analyzed, to send it to the European Commission.
The meeting between the manufacturers’ committee and the initiative undertaken by the Gal Nebrodi Plus to encourage the production sector, in fact allowed, burning the stages, to reach the improvement of the documentation required for the recognition of the two brands.
For the first time, in fact, with a question, under a single brand, the DOP recording of the meat, capocollo, lard, cheek, raw ham and cooked ham deriving from the processing, seasoning and aging of the black pig’s productions and IGP for the hazelnut is requested. The Nebrodi’s black pig meat is highly appreciated, the result of the mastery of the Norcini who have specialized in the territory who, today, thanks to the experience and competence acquired over time, manage to express themselves at significant quality levels.
