The contours of the affair of the botulinum intoxication in Calabria are now outlined, which caused two deaths and hospitalization in the Cosenza hospital of fifteen other people, with the last one that has been added in the last few hours.
This is while widening the number of suspects from the Paola prosecutor who goes up to ten people, of which six doctors. At the origin of the intoxication, according to the analyzes of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, there would be more foods and not only the turnip greens served to season the sandwiches with the sausage sold in a food truck by a diamond street vendor (Cosenza). Friarielli who, however, will still be withdrawn from the market: the call for two brands, for suspicious risk of contamination, has been published on the Ministry of Health website. The call concerns two lots of the ‘Bel Saporè and two brand’ Vittorià brand, coming from a plant in the Salerno area.
The results of the analyzes were sent to the Public Prosecutor of Paola who coordinates the investigations. Ten people are investigated in the investigation, including the street vendor, three managers of the product’s manufacturers and six doctors – one has been added in the last hours – of two health structures from Cosentino who have had Luigi di Sarno, 52 years old from Cercola, and Tamara D’Acunto, 45 years old from Diamante, before their death. The crimes of manslaughter, culpable personal injuries and trade in harmful food, are assumed to them in various capacities. After a series of investigations and the results of the analyzes of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the hypothesis is the one that a “only kitchen tool was used to handle food, otherwise it is not explained”, explained the prosecutor Domenico Fiordalisi. A kitchen tool that thus caused a domino effect on all the foods in the Food Truck.
The attorney of the street merchant: “The products were not exhibited in the open sun, but stored in the fridge”
A thesis, that of the Prosecutor, who is contrasted by the defender of the street merchant. The products on sale in the truck food of “my client were not exhibited in the sun and open but were kept in the fridge and open if necessary”, explained the lawyer Francesco Liserre, defender of the street merchant who highlighted that “my client is devastated psychologically. It is convinced that the contamination was already in the products”.
