Return to Calabria? It is a hypothesis that takes into consideration 70% of professionals employed far from their homeland. And the apparently most paradoxical fact is that the greater the professional roots outside Calabria, the stronger the bond remains. Geographical distance and identity distance do not coincide, at least according to the results of the research “I return to Calabria”, supported by Lions International and Webgenesys spa, carried out on a project by Dr. Domenico Minasi, former director of Paediatrics at the Grand Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio and currently national president of the Association of Italian Hospital Paediatricians.
Some characteristics of the mobility of young Calabrians under the age of 40 residing outside the region have come under the spotlight, through the analysis of the reasons for leaving, the training and professional paths, the current work activities, the relationship maintained with the territory of origin and the conditions considered necessary for a possible return or for active involvement in the development of Calabria. The research was carried out with a structured questionnaire administered online. «The proposed conclusions – underlines Minasi – constitute useful indications to guide further research activities and to support the definition of public policies aimed at enhancing regional human capital».
