Our dialogue continues with “Rosa” candidates in the regional elections of 5 and 6 October in Calabria. We addressed some candidates to the Regional Council five questions to understand their motivations, priorities and proposals, with the aim of offering readers a direct look at the people who ask for the trust of the voters.

Here are the five questions that also in this second episode of our investigation we asked the candidates for the regional council on general themes but also specific to the experience in politics for a woman.

1

2. Few women in the regional council, especially in the central and southern circumscriptions. What do you think of the gender issue also linked to representation?

3 How to convince people to go to vote?

4. What are the themes on which it will commit more decision if elected?

5. How do you imagine Calabria in the coming years and what contribution do you think you can give this change?

In this second episode Elisabetta Aiello (Forza Italia, Central District) and Paola Petronio (Tridico President, Centro District) replied.

Elisabetta Aiello (psychologist)

1. I was born in 1993 and my father (the former senator and regional councilor Piero Aiello) came for the first time in 1995. I just grew up with him, even on the days when I perhaps didn’t go to school I went to him in the Department and when I became bigger I organized the electoral campaigns. We lived together with Rome, in the Senate, and I worked with him. I have a discreet experience even if it is the first time that I measure myself with a candidacy. My choice to take the field was dictated by the group because I do not go anywhere alone and you will never hear me speaking firsthand, I always speak with the “we”. We are a group that has decided to take the bequest of my father, a bequest of a few years that, alas, went a little to crumble. But we recovered, we went back and we are trying to carry on those values that have always distinguished us: the defense of Catanzaro, of the metropolitan area of Catanzaro-Lamezia and the provinces of Crotone and Vibo. Alas, the central area of Calabria in recent years has been a little mistreated, forgotten and the fundamental value that guides every choice is the value of the family understood in a broad sense: doing good for Calabrian families, not the personal good that concerns me. I don’t live in politics, I have my professional activity and I will not abandon it.
2. I am a convinced feminist, in the good sense of course. For me, women also in institutional, administrative and entrepreneurial roles must have a prominent position and must not be, remaining to the political sphere of simple filler. In fact, in one of my Reel that I publish every week I also spoke of the so -called “pink quotas”. Women must be protagonists at 360 degrees and our group and I can be an example: the group we refounded is composed in the majority by women. I prefer us women because perhaps we can bring our skills, our sensitivity and our wit in the regional council.
3. The vote is a right and a duty of each of us. Abstenism does nothing but feed this vicious circle in which people then complain that they are not well represented and not to believe in politics anymore. But the citizens have the knife on the side of the handle: if the citizen does not go to vote he cannot elect those representatives who could make the difference. Abstenseism is a phenomenon that must be fought, which unfortunately then falls into resignation. At this moment Calabria does not need resignation, but needs concrete facts
4. One of the priorities is certainly health, left a little pending. Being a psychologist, I would like to be a bearer of novelty from this point of view. Healthcare is a theme that is close to my heart, my father is a doctor and he too has unracted with his example. I would like to bring new proposals to the Regional Council to restore the health plan and what the Calabrians deserve. Healthcare is a theme that cares about everyone because the percentages speak clearly, but we must not resign ourselves. The public system is not only mediocre in Calabria, but also in other realities in our country. We have to roll up our sleeves and work with the president Occhiuto who has spent so much in recent years also for healthcare. Then we have to look, as I said first, to the rebirth of the central area of Calabria. Catanzaro capital and the other provinces must return to play an important role in the Calabrian institutions.
5. I don’t think much about the future, even my electoral slogan says it: I’m here now. We think actively of the present and what we can give today. We work with what we have today to improve tomorrow.

Paola Petronio (bank official)

1. Mine is a choice that sees politics as a service. My story makes me fully find myself with the slogan of the Tridic Electoral campaign. The story of a girl who studied in Bologna and who immediately started working. But I always had that desire, that thought for the land of origin: why do things (in the north) work and do not? I also had some luck and I had the opportunity to choose to return. Return to do what? To make my contribution on a personal, professional level and in society, in associations (I am Capo-Scout), in the world of the union. And today I decided to put myself in the service of this project of these ideas: give everyone the opportunity, to young people in particular, to live in Calabria without regrets. We must not be content with living in Calabria.
2. Meanwhile, in the formation of the tridic lists, he has launched a message: an equal formation that goes beyond the legislative dictate. The women have space, they have to take it a little by putting it desire, face, determination that all have usually. In this return I trust that there will certainly be more elected women. It is not easy because the woman maintains a still key role within the family organization, and remaining to my example to balance everything is not easy because I am also a professional and I am engaged in the social. But when you have this constructive spirit, you want to do it, you can. And the best example towards the new generations is to do it, there is there.
3 That of Tridico, but also my candidacy. I have always been close to politics, but it is the first time that I go down to the field firsthand and I think that giving a new possibility to the electorate is positive because it corresponds to a hope of being able to change things. I think I transmit my determination to people and in this way I think I can convince people to go to vote.
4. The theme is absolute health. Here, however, many things have been said, they continue to be said and surely the theme of health is there. But strictly correlated there is the theme of the conditions to be offered to our young people to return and give them work. How do you get the job? Not by decree, but going to stimulate the competitiveness of our companies. You have to have particular attention because so they will need to take our young people.
5. Ours must become a Calabria in which you no longer have to be satisfied. This is a bit of the vision I have and I want to reach, because many other regions of the South also made it to have that redemption, the extra one in both tourist services and in infrastructures. We can do it, I see a Calabria that takes that extra step and growing. Which has absolutely not been so far.
