On September 10, 2000, 25 years ago, in the Turrami of Soverato, the flooding of the Beltrame torrent, swelling for two days of incessant rains, overwhelmed the campsite, which at that moment hosted about fifty people, many of which are disabled, accompanied by the volunteers of the Unitalsi di Catanzaro who in that oasis of peace immersed among the olive trees a few meters from the sea. The waters of the Beltrame stream, with their load of mud and debris, dragged curtains, bungalows, caravans. And above all the life of thirteen people, including that of Vinicio Caliò, the young custodian of the campsite, the only one whose body has never been found.

Only the massive and timely intervention of the rescue – hundreds of firefighters who came from all over Italy and who together with volunteers of the place dug in the mud between tree trunks on the beach, cars crumpled and animal carcasses – prevented the balance of the massacre was more serious. After the disaster, the search for responsibilities is inevitable. The Le Giare Camping had been built in the riverbed, in a hydrogeological risk area. For this reason, at the end of the trial they were condemned for multiple manslaughter, with a judgment now final, the owner of the structure, an official of the local agency and another of the Calabria Region. At the funeral of the thirteen victims, on 13 September 25 years ago, the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi also took part. For this evening, starting at 5.30 pm, a ceremony is scheduled to remember the victims.
