A laurel wreath was placed today at the base of the plaque reminiscent of the murder of Marshal Pasquale Azzolinaformer commander of the Carabinieri station of Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte, barbarously murdered 29 years ago with a gunshots during a check. At the ceremony this morning in the ‘Ponte Crasta’ district of the Aspromontano Municipality, the family members of the killed non -commissioned officer – awarded the bronze medal for military valor – civil and military authorities were present. Following the Holy Mass officiated by the military chaplain was celebrated Don Aldo Ripepi and of the parish priest Don Marco Larosain the church of Sant’Ambrogio.
Also this year the Carabinieri weapon has heard the duty to remember with a moment of recollection the memory of the fellow soldier who has lost his life in the fulfillment of his duty. An indelible memory, a constant example in the life of each carabiniere, a harbinger of indications precisely in this moment of the life of the country in which the service rendered to others is very much felt.
On June 17, 1996, just before midnight, Azzolina and one of the carabinieri on duty, two brothers of Sant’Eufemia d’Erpromonte known by them, intent on dismantling mechanical parts by an incidental motion-hape, parked on the margins of the roadway, noticed in the ‘Ponte Crasta’. The two boys, one of which minors at the time of the facts, agreed to follow the two soldiers in the barracks for the subsequent checks but, suddenly, the largest of the two extracted a Beretta Cal. 7.65 with which he opened the fire against Marshal Azzolina killing him. Captured after a brief hiding, the two brothers were subsequently sentenced to heavy prison penalties by the Court of Assizes of Palmi.
