During an operation aimed at combating poaching in wooded areas and theft of weapons from hunters, the Carabinieri of the Santo Stefano station in Aspromonte identified a man intent on illegal hunting using an acoustic thrush call that is still in operation.

The intervention took place in the dense wooded area of the Scifadi di Santo Stefano district, in the Ceramida area, where the soldiers heard from a distance the persistent cry of a thrush reproduced continuously, such as to suggest the use of an electronic device.

Approaching the area of origin of the sound, the Carabinieri identified a man sitting on a stool, with a rifle slung over his shoulder and, not far away, an electromagnetic acoustic call still active. A recently killed specimen of song thrush was found in the trunk of the man’s car. The weapon, the acoustic call and all the material deemed relevant were seized, while the subject was reported for violating the laws on the protection of wildlife.

The operation is part of the broader preventive device implemented by the Carabinieri to combat poaching and ensure compliance with the rules in wooded areas. It is represented that the person involved is to be considered innocent until a final sentence is reached, according to the principle of presumption of innocence.
