Italy has extended the suspension of the Schengen agreement which concerns in particular the restoration of air and sea border controls of travelers arriving from Spain. We learn this from informed sources. The measure, now extended for another fifteen days, was introduced on August 1st after the Ceuta migration crisis.

The decision to extend the suspension of Schengen with Spain «was taken, in line with the analysis carried out by the Immigration and Border Security Analysis Committee, due to the persistence of the evaluation elements that had been the basis of their reintroduction last August 1st, but at the same time also taking into account the initiatives already launched by Spain, together with the European Union, so that the situation in that area can move towards a near normalization. The Ministry of the Interior communicates this. The assessments underlying the extension provision “were communicated by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during a constructive telephone discussion”.
Piantedosi: “I trust it can be the last”
“I trust that it could be the last because it would mean that, as we imagine, we are moving towards a normalization of the situation.” This is how the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, responded to journalists who asked whether the extension of the suspension of the Schengen treaty with Spain decided today by the Government will be the last. “We trust and are also available for any form of collaboration with Spain and the European Union”, he added.
Spain extends controls on arrivals from Italy for another two weeks
Madrid has decided «to extend for two weeks the border controls of passengers who access the national territory from Italy by sea or air. This is what sources from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior report to ANSA. The decision is explained after the formal communication received from Italy of the extension for another 15 days of the suspension of Schengen against Spain. The controls established last August 8 for an initial period of one month were thus extended for another 15 days, in reciprocity – it is underlined – with the decision taken by the Italian government.
